A LITTLE HELLO KITTY SPLASH PARTY (WITH A LOT OF PICTURES...)

This girl...
...was ready to party this morning!
We started off with some snacking and swimming and splashing...
There was lots of cupcake eating...
...some swinging and biking (and wagon riding, and trumpet playing)...
  And lots of love!
   And presents, of course!
And to end the party, some water balloon throwing...
Thank you all for coming out to celebrate our little girl's big day! She was so happy and felt very loved (and was quite spoiled)

HOORAY FOR A HAPPY BABY!

Just proof that Lauren not only survived two hours at our house without her parents tonight, but that she enjoyed herself. The first 5 minutes were heartbreaking, but we quickly remembered to bribe her with food and all was well after that. Smiles, laughter, and clapping - yay us! Come back anytime sweet girl! (And for the record, Will was just as calm and polite and easy to babysit as we remembered - poor Al and Christina hadn't had a date night in almost a year...)

PINK CAKE

When I asked Cora what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday, she yelled "PINK!", so a pink butter cake "with sugar" is what she got. It was pretty funny when she blew out the candles (over and over... sneaky mommy gave her one trick candle in the middle...) and powdered sugar went everywhere. She was a happy girl, despite the owie she had in her right eye (she was too stubborn before cake to let us rinse it out, hence the red, watery, sad look...)

ERDC BEACH PARTY

Although we brought the sand toys again this year, the kids were far more interested in the bouncy houses.

ALL ABOUT CORA: 3-YEARS

Well, today is the day. It's the day we've been looking forward to for weeks, yet also dreading for months. Cora is 3-years-old now, and that means we now have two preschoolers in the house. There is not a bit of baby left in our girl - she's growing up before our very eyes, becoming stronger and smarter and more independent every week. These are all wonderful things, of course, but as parents, it's also a little hard to watch your kids get bigger, reaching new milestones and leaving their babyhood and toddlerhood behind. Especially when they're the baby of the family. So don't mind us if we walk around with tears in our eyes for a few days - we're happy and excited and SO PROUD of our big girl, but we're also saying goodbye to the baby years, and it's not easy.

At 3-years-old, Cora is quite the character. She is the queen of silly (and sometimes creepy) faces. She sings and dances constantly, often making up her own songs and melodies. She laughs hysterically at herself when she does or says something that she thinks is funny, and she will repeat herself (much like her PawPaw!) if needed to make sure everyone heard her and responds appropriately.

She can also swing a swift 180 in less than a heartbeat when she is upset about something. This girl can still throw a mean tantrum, and her tears are crocodile-sized, complete with screams and red face and all. You thought she knew how to get her way as a baby or toddler? You should see her now. The Queen still reigns around here folks, and we're not ashamed to admit it. We try to roll with the punches and pick our battles, but please don't think we let her get away with things just because she knows how to put up a fight. We're not THAT soft. Luckily, her sass has been mostly curbed (due to the threat, and occasional use of "washing her mouth out with soap"). While it took only once or twice for James to get on board with not sassing, post soap introduction, it took Cora months, so we're pretty happy to be where we're at right now. She doesn't get sent to time out very often, and she rarely hits and never bites anymore. Again, more good, growing up benefits, reminding ourselves that it's actually kinda nice to be moving out of the baby phase...

Now don't get me wrong, she may be a bit of a drama queen, but she is also one of the sweetest and most caring kids we know. She has that future-mother instinct that causes her to ooh and ahh at babies and kittens, hug her daddy extra tight when he looks sad or stressed, pat mama's back if mama complains about feeling sick or sore or tired, kiss her brother goodnight every night whether he wants it or not, run to the defense of her friends or brother, consoling them as needed, blowing kisses to strangers and making new friends everywhere she goes and hugging her friends' parents (specifically doting on other daddies...), and just generally being adorable and lovable. She has always been one of the favorites at school (both of the teachers, and the other, older-than-her kids), and since she used to be so shy, we assumed it was just because she was so smart and cute. While that's still true (that she's smart and cute), we're really amazed at how much more social she's become in the past year.

As for the technicalities, Cora is still our awesome eater, still our less than awesome sleeper, and once again an awesome potty trained preschooler. She is still hanging right under 30 pounds, though her height has increased to at least 37.5" (we're pretty certain she's going through a major growth spurt at the moment). She doesn't have her wellness exam (see, I didn't say well baby...) until the end of July, so it will be a while before we have "official" stats. What's official though, is that today, at 12:17pm, she turned 3. And thus we move onward as our Baby Doll (the nickname will never change) enters a new phase of life, and we watch her with pride and amazement. We love you Cora!

WHAT IF?...

What if that tiny fever on Monday indicates more than teething? Why hasn't that cough gone away, even though her nose is less runny than it was on Wednesday? How come she's still waking up at night and having a hard time going back to sleep?

We are paranoid parents (not as bad as we were when the kids were infants, but still, we worry) and decided to take Cora by to see the good doc this morning, just in case. Yes, on her birthday. Lucky girl. Turns out her left ear is infected. Who would have thought? We figured if it wasn't just teething, that maybe we'd get an "allergies" diagnosis. But nope, she gets to start antibiotics, just in time to have to coordinate them (and remember to give them in a timely manner) on vacation.

In case anyone out there is wondering, THIS is why we went back and forth all week wondering whether she was actually sick or just teething:

Sure seems full of energy and zing to me!

P.S. Those of you coming over for Cora's birthday party tomorrow, never fear, she is not contagious (hasn't had fever in days) and it's just an ear infection, nothing more. Party on!

HELLO KITTY BIRTHDAY GIRL

Cora woke up this morning to the sounds of her brother hovering over her ear whispering "Wake up Cora, it's your birthday now! Wake up! There's presents! It's your birthday!" After a quick duet of the birthday song while our birthday girl blinked herself awake (late night last night playing with the castle, plus a middle of the night waking...), we quickly got the kids dressed and set Cora up with her other present from us (a bag filled with Hello Kitty paraphernalia: a crown, beach towel, swimsuit, straw sippy cup, puzzle set, magnetic dress-up dolls, stickers, a coloring book, magna-doodle, nail polish, bow, and a little plush Hello Kitty - Jay asked if the Sanrio store exploded in our living room).
Modeling the giant Hello Kitty bow for her. And yes, he chose a green shirt today so he could match his birthday girl. And James. How come he never wants to match me?...

A CASTLE FOR OUR LITTLE QUEEN

We couldn't wait any longer to give Cora her birthday gift from us, so late tonight when we got home from spin class and dinner, and after chasing fireflies for a while, we pulled out the big boxes, knowing full well she'd want to play and likely be up 2 hours past her bedtime. And it was totally worth it!
(Yes, James jumped in with Batman to rescue the princess and the My Little Ponies)
 Happy early birthday Baby Doll!

JUST A DULL PAIN...

So... Jay's been running on a fracture for the past 2 months.
See that little "chip" I circled up there? That happened in the first big mud puddle at Warrior Dash, toe smashed on an underwater root. It's likely encased in scar tissue by now. He has two options: surgery to remove it, or just live with it. He'll be seeing a surgical podiatrist in July, but considering our doc told him they'd have to do the surgery from the underside of the foot, he's not too interested in that. A dull pain there (that he explains as similar to arthritis/stiff joints) for forever is no big deal, right?... Good thing he registered for the Watermelon Classic today!

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS

This specialty gardenia bush smells SO GOOD when it blooms! We all love it!

THE MILESTONE THAT NEVER ENDS...

It seems that most of the difficult childhood milestones are conquered, and then we move on. For example, learning to sleep through the night (though it may take some kids FOREVER, they do all eventually sleep), potty training (sure, regression happens, and sometimes happens again and again, but it's not they'll still be having accidents in elementary school), and taking away the paci (so much easier than taking away the thumb). Teething, however, does not make it onto that list. Oh no. Teething reoccurs forever. Forever I tell you! And if your child is prone to mild fevers, runny nose, and night waking due to teething pain, do not expect them to grow out of it. Hopefully Cora won't still be taking that teething Q to school when she gets her permanent teeth...
Poor Baby Doll. Mommy and daddy didn't think of the obvious when that mild fever struck on Monday. Good thing requests for ice and a clear runny nose and hunting down teething toys finally clued us in to check her mouth. Ibuprofen it is!

A RARE SHOPPING ADVENTURE

I don't normally take the kids shopping for anything other than groceries. And occasionally to Walmart. There are carts at both places, and thus they can be contained. On the rare occasion that I've taken them to the Outlet Mall (because I couldn't find time to go alone), I put Cora in the Beco on my back and confined James to the umbrella stroller, because 'that one time' that I took them without, they ran wild like animals and we had to leave 5 minutes later so that I didn't tie them to posts...

I had planned to take the kids to the pool again today, since last week proved that I can handle doing so without Jay now that they are both older and pay better attention to me (and the lifeguards), but with Cora still coughing and a quick mama-poll to determine whether it was a good idea or not, I decided to skip it, just in case (we can't have her being sick on her birthday, let alone vacation). And I didn't feel like going home. And it was far too hot to go to the park. And since I needed to find a dress for Cora's 3-year portraits (scheduled to be taken by her daddy this weekend), I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best, and took the kids clothes shopping with me.

I will admit that I bribed them with the promise of ice cream once we found a dress, to reward them for their good behavior (basically, as long as they didn't try to climb any clothes racks or knock displays over, I considered it good behavior - there was plenty of running and chasing and squealing and accessorizing from bins, as well as a little TV watching at Gymboree). And it worked. And that is why I am totally fine with the occasional bribe. (Or, you know, daily bribes. Whatever it takes.)

Trying on straw hats at GAP. They happily danced around the store like this for 20 minutes. Luckily there weren't many other patrons. Cora found 7 dresses that she liked, but I vetoed them all for various reasons (not available in her size, too much orange, too expensive, etc.) And no, we did not buy the hats, though I was tempted...
How sweet are they? I asked them to hold hands and stick together whenever we were outside, and they did so without reminders between each and every store. And yes, Cora can still wear that green with white polka dots and pink accents outfit that her Grambot sent her 15 months ago (though the shirt is borderline too short).
Ah, sweet reward. These kids knew the drill too. They walked right into Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory ahead of me, told the lady what color ice cream they wanted, then walked into the adjoining shop to sit at a table to eat while I paid the bill. The lady asked if we'd been there before...
And in the end? We picked a green dress with white polka dots and pink accents.

FEVER FIXES

Popsicles (many, many popsicles...)
Fresh air combined with ceiling fans (and distractions)
Naps on cool leather couches (after waking up, climbing out of bed to find mama, and falling back asleep in mama's arms in the kitchen)

PLAYIN' OLD SCHOOL

Gramma brought Jay and Jamie's old Lite Brite when she was visiting recently, so we cleaned it up (the Magic Eraser is truly amazing...) and it works good as new. The kids LOVE it. We love it too. Except when James attempted to open the tupperware full of pegs, effectively flinging them across the entire living room, kitchen, and hallway. Thank goodness I had just vacuumed, so sweeping them up didn't involve any cat hair...

WE LOVE COMPANY

Jay and I decided we needed a weekend at home, to rest after all the activities we've been up to lately, but also to catch up on some overdue housecleaning, to prep for Cora's upcoming birthday party, and to get ready for the inspection/appraisal for our refinance. Busy busy busy. But we needed a break in the afternoon, so we put our feet up and poured some of Jay's brews while the Jungs came over to play, then fired up the grill for dinner when Sophie and the boys showed up. It was a very nice day with a great mix of relaxation and productivity, and the kids were all too happy to have their buddies over at their house to play!
