JANUARY OR JUNE?

Flip flops and campfires at the end of January? Weirdest weather...
(Yes, they did grab jackets once the breeze picked up, but mostly because they had wet swimsuits on underneath...)

JAMES' FIRST PINEWOOD DERBY

This was James and Cora's (and my) first ever Pinewood Derby experience, and it was more fun and excitement than I expected! Jay is an Eagle Scout and has participated in who knows how many derbies over the years (Jean saved at least 3 of his cars, since they made their way to Mississippi in plenty of time to be entered into our Pack's Derby). From the start, it was cool to see the kids' enthusiasm for designing their own cars (we ended up getting Cora a kit, but James used his daddy's cars as examples to draw his very own aerodynamic shape). There was cutting (for James' car only), sanding, painting, detailing, and the final (very careful) addition of the wheels (to ensure proper alignment and maximum spin). Both kids wanted "Flash" cars, and as expected, Cora's was Pink Flash (as she calls herself when they play superhero games - it's also the name written on her Home Depot Kid Craft bib...) I thought all 3 of them did a great job (I helped not at all, not even with the shopping for bits and pieces) and it was fun to see Jay get so involved in a kid craft ;-)
That face!
The sander felt very weird...
He traded out the black wheels that came with his kit for red ones, to which he added yellow paint for the spokes
Room full of Cub Scouts and their families (29 of 36 Scouts and 12 family members entered cars)
Receiving his Popcorn Sales patch ("rewards/incentives" still on their way)
James earned two new belt loops for his Campout adventures
We decided we needed a front row seat while Cora and Daddy raced
This round, Cora's car came in first, and Jay's limped to the finish line with some assistance... He won "Most Vintage" for his 30-something-year-old car, which clearly needed it's alignment checked prior to race day. Jay wants you all to know that this particular car made it all the way to Regionals back in the day though!
Tiger Scout rounds!
That's James out front - he won every Tiger Scout round!
Cora made some friends to create necklaces with while the boys raced
In addition to Jay's certificate, James won "Most Electrifying" and Cora won "Most Artistic". Cora took 3rd in the family division, and James took 1st for Tiger Scouts and 2nd overall (which means he'll be racing at the District Derby!) Team Lindsay was pretty proud of their showing at their first Pack 107 (now Pack 7, to join the Boy Scouts) Pinewood Derby!
Seriously though, how cute is that pit crew?!
And here are all the adorable little Tiger Scouts (I don't know all their names, and they were missing one boy, but I know James wants to invite them all to his birthday party and he considers them all to be his good friends! GIRLS DAY, BOYS DAY

Jay and I had our first opportunity of 2016 to split the kids up for some one-on-one time with each of us today. James attended a friend's birthday party in Jackson, followed by some adventuring and shopping with his daddy. Cora attended the Girl Scout event put on by the Society for Women Engineers (where the girls rotated through 6 stations doing various science experiments), officially checked in our Pinewood Derby cars (competition is tomorrow!), went to the Chili for Children cook-off, ran some errands with mama (and earned some new beads for necklace making), and ended her day with swimsuits and water balloons (due to the 70-something degree temps).
Cold after the shower and sporting daddy's robe
Troop 3315 sparkle shirt and Trefoil clip - check
 Launching Alka-Seltzer rockets
 Milk swirls and lava lamps
 Gumdrop molecules
Polymer lesson with a Ziploc bag of water and a pencil. Cora's hypothesis was correct, but only because her pencil placement was off ;-)
Building a water tower to withstand earthquakes and tornados
Sitting pretty with McKinley and Cara Beth after the event

Cora and her car, Pink Flash (we'll get Jay and James pictured with their cars tomorrow)
Chili for Children fundraiser: chili for mama, slides, bubbles, and tattoos for Cora
Ready to get James with her water balloons

 Talon's 6th Birthday Party at Chuck-E-Cheese
Pretty sure we'll be getting James a punching bag for his birthday...
Checking out the spillway: cleaning up trash (without being asked) and building a shelter for animals. We love his nature-loving spirit!
