We woke up yesterday with an alarm, since we had a date at 9am with the local vet clinic in Dawson to meet some pups. Bailey and Dazzle had already been adopted (and we had checked out a few other dogs in Auburn on our drive in on Friday - none of which were THE ONE), but we still needed to meet Libby, and Buster D, a doggie recommended to us after our inquiries about the others. The kids busied themselves on trikes and bikes while we reloaded the van for the long ride home.
After meeting Buster D, and thinking immediately that he was an awesome dog, and just might be THE dog for us, we met Libby. Who was too spastic for our family (and very uninterested in us), even though she was adorable (and significantly smaller than Buster D). We had the vet bring Buster back out for a second time, took him for a walk, and decided he would be the perfect fit for us. They labeled him as a Blue Heeler/Bassett Hound Mix, but who knows how many breeds are mixed into him. He's long with short legs (but don't underestimate him like we did, he can jump!), currently weighs 34 lbs (and is very stocky and muscular), and is white everywhere except for his face and ears (and his fur is very short, and so far seems to be a light shedder). Our friend Erin thinks there might be some Catahoula Cur mixed into him based on his merle coloring. He's 3-years-old, and thus already house trained and very calm. He is QUIET (perfect for Cora). Except for at night, when left downstairs in his crate... We found out at bedtime last night that he does indeed have a voice and we quickly Googled what to do with a new dog... Apparently he gets to stay in OUR room in his crate for a few nights while he adjusts. Luckily, once he was satisfied by our presence (Catahoula Curs, like many other breeds, don't do well with isolation - they want to be part of the pack - so welcome to Team Lindsay Buster D!) he went right to sleep and didn't make a peep for the rest of the night. Though he did great climbing up to our room last night, I found out this morning that he's not a fan of going DOWN stairs... Took a lot of encouragement (and for a while there I thought I was going to have to carry him down). He's a sweetie and loves to snuggle and hug. His tail thumps with determination and his ears go crooked when he smiles. And he has the cutest little begging pose - standing stock still on his hind legs with his front paws tucked up like a squirrel! He does great on his leash and doesn't pull. He knows his name (the vet had him listed under Buster D. for over a year now, so we're very unlikely to change it, even though it presents a bit of a challenge since we often call James Buster...) and seems to be a really smart little guy. He was a great traveler (for all 8+ hours that we were on the road yesterday he was calm and quiet, and did great for all his potty breaks) and seems very comfortable at our house so far (despite Cora's occasional loud shriek), making himself right at home in Einstein's old doggie bed.
