GILROY GARDENS

Auntie Taryn gave Cora a very fun and fancy hairstyle for the day! (While she put on Addy's pretend makeup over and over and over...)
PawPaw walks into the park with Cora, Eli, and James
The boys tended to stick together for rides, especially if they could ride in the same vehicle, but the girls (as expected) both always wanted to drive, so they were always in their own vehicles.
Don't mind their refusal to smile for the camera - they were having fun, I promise!
Taryn and I took a turn at our own ride - a timber rattler roller coaster!
This was Cora and James' most anticipated event of the day: the Octonauts show!
She danced, she answered questions, she sung along... she LOVED it!
James retreated to his daddy's lap, but also says he loved the show.
It's like meeting a celebrity, I suppose. Check out those smiles!
Their favorite "ride" in the park was the Pinnacles rock maze. They spent 20-30 minutes in there. Twice. David and Jay and I chased them around and hid from them, jumping out from around corners, but they were SO FAST (and also able to sneak through the tunnel short cuts that they often scared us too!
There was a bridge/walkway above the maze, so we were able to sneak up there and get a good look at the hoodlums now and then when we couldn't find them (the acoustics were weird in there, plus there was music playing, so it was a little tricky to catch up with them at points - luckily there are only 2 entrances/exits and PawPaw sat between them to keep his eye out for escapees).
Jay and David cooling off at the series of waterfalls
Riding the monorail
PawPaw broke the cardiologists rules and rode the bigger roller coaster with us ladies...
David and Taryn float with Cora in front of the giant mushroom...
Ridin' that train... (Cora took Grambot to the back, trying to get a little alone time with her)
The park has a few different splash pad areas, and the kids were far overdue for a little cooling off...
Waterslide (kinda) in their clothes. No worries.
These cousins love each other just a little bit!
Addy and Cora with PawPaw on the balloon ride. Mama took one for the team and took the boys. Luckily I did not get as nauseated as I did in the spinning strawberries...
What a fun day and great amusement park for little kids. Thank you so much mom and dad for taking us on this adventure - the kids will be talking about it for a long, LONG time!

FIRST "SLEEP OUT"

We arranged yesterday to let the kids have their very first sleepover, or as James called it, a "sleep out". David and Taryn agreed that "What better FIRST sleepover than with their cousins?", so we packed our overnight gear (planning to sleep on the couch) and headed over for dinner. The kids ate and played and stayed up a little late (but not too late, surprisingly), then Uncle Davey followed his usual bedtime routine and our kids (mostly) fell in line.
Cora and Addy snuggled in with her LeapPad.
Eli and James snuggled in with Uncle Davey to read a chapter from their current bedtime story, then promptly passed out (after a short delay due to mama forgetting to pack James' lovie, a dinosaur that used to belong to Jay and has the job of keeping James' nightmares away). These boys are golden.
The girls were a much different story, of course... They were up and down a few times, asking to "hang out", going potty, getting scared of "too much stuff" in the room, etc. And just when we thought they were settling down, we heard screams and looked at the monitor in time to see them looking like they were having a cat fight, then tearing off the bed in search of adults. Our best guess is that Addy fell asleep, startled herself awake (or Cora woke her up), and freaked out about having someone in her bed (she doesn't share her bed ever, unlike Cora, who often sleeps with mama and daddy or James or whichever grandparent is visiting). At that point (after 1-1.5 hours of fighting them and all of us getting more than a bit frustrated), we suggested to each other that maybe we should separate them and Addy overheard the idea to put her in David and Taryn's bed, and it was over - she calmed down and made a beeline for their room. So I lay with Cora until she chilled out while they got Addy to fall asleep. After some fun drinking IPA's and playing Cards Against Humanity, we called it a night around midnight and I retreated to Addy's bed with Cora while Jay slept on the couch. I suppose a 50% success rate isn't bad for our first sleepover. And better to go through initiation with family, who have to love us no matter how difficult our kids are, eh? Eh?! It was fun guys and we should absolutely do it again. James is of course asking over and over to go to Eli's house for another sleep out!

FRIDAY HOME DAY

Doing puzzles with daddy on the bathroom stool
Watching hummingbirds at the feeders
Sweeping birdseed off the patio into Bigfoot's domain
Riding trikes with Eli
Making chalk drawings with Addy and Eli (James is drawing a finish line flag)
Playing Eli's new board game (and nobody was following the directions...)
Eli likes to line up toys. James had to restrain himself from crashing the plane into them.
Matching owl sippy cups

DRESS-TURNED-MAXI

Two years ago I made Cora a dress that I planned to add straps and a ribbon to... but I didn't... so it sat around in her closet unworn. Well, she's now too big for the dress, but her waist is still small enough that it fits perfectly as a maxi skirt, so we brought it on vacation so she could get dressed up a few times. Pretty dang cute, if I do say so myself!
Dress without straps (because I couldn't decide how I wanted to do them)
Maxi skirt on my little model
Posing with some of PawPaw's pretty flowers

HAPPY 3RD BIRTHDAY SUPER CHRISTOPHER!

One of my main reasons for planning our summer vacation for late July / early August this year was to overlap our west coast visit with Christopher's 3rd birthday (which is today!)

When we originally registered for the Mt. Ashland Hill Climb (which is next weekend), Christopher was anticipating a summer of recovery and adventure! Then he unexpectedly got sick again and treatment plans were unknown for a while. We planned our trip to include a visit up to Portland to see the Johnsons during the Oregon portion of our trip, knowing they wouldn't be able to travel south to Ashland. Following an initial series of treatments and tests though, they opted to put Christopher in a chemo trial up in Seattle. Due to the nature of the trial, Christopher needs to be there for the first and second rounds of treatment, as well as the weeks in between, meaning that he and Robyn (with Stephen and grandma alternating weeks staying with them) are in Seattle for a full month. I'm sad that I'm not able to spend time with my best friends on this trip, but I'm focusing my energy to be happy and positive, sending healing thoughts and prayers up to Christopher, who deserves an awesome birthday today!
Robyn sent me these photos of him doing some water painting recently. I couldn't resist sending him some barn animal sheets, considering his love of all things farm. Love that smile, love those tattoos, and love that he's into crafts like Cora!
Seriously, does he not have the best little personality ever?
(This one is from their trip to the Seattle Aquarium their first week there. I hope he's able to be out adventuring and smiling big today on his birthday too!)

We love you Johnsons!!! Give that sweet boy a great big birthday hug from Team Lindsay!
