LAVA BEDS NATIONAL PARK

July 9, 2006 (2 miles)
After a quick trip up to Eugene yesterday to see Jenny and her boyfriend Ladd, we spent another fun night with Robyn and Stephen, then had a great good-bye lunch before heading out to Lava Beds. We took the drive slow, making stops whenever there was a good view. We had a good long talk too. We spent a bit of time at Tulelake, where Jay took lots of bird photos and I searched for something new (no luck). We ran into Tom and Kale Bowling-Schaff at the visitor center (a couple we had worked with back at Carlsbad Caverns, who we had heard moved onto the Redwoods), small world! Before bed, Jay got some great sunset photos and we attended the evening campfire program. The next morning, I showed Jay some of my favorite spots (Golden Dome, Skull, Sunshine, and Valentine Caves, and the Fleener Chimneys). I saw a new bird in the early morning light, a Blue Grouse!

Saying goodbye to Robyn and Stephen at the end of a great week in Oregon!
