SANTA'S IN TOWN

ERDC had a visit from Santa this afternoon. Just like last year, James was happy to hop into Santa's lap and have a little chat. And tug his beard to make sure it was real.
And just like last year, Cora refused to sit with Santa. Or even talk to him. Though she did once again run up to grab the candy cane he offered, after watching he and James apprehensively from the sideline.
She was willing to get closer to him as long as I was holding her, so Christina took a family photo for us.
We couldn't hear what James said when Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas, so I asked him at bedtime. He told me "I asked for the castle. The one that you said I can't have." (He is referring to the Imaginext castle he spotted at Walmart when we were shopping for OCC boxes last month, at which time I told him we were shopping for OTHER kids and that he could ask Santa for it. Mind of a steel trap.) Anyway, he had been telling us that he wanted Santa to bring him a real bike with pedals, so I questioned him as to whether he preferred Santa to bring him the bike or the castle, since Santa only brings ONE gift to each child in the whole wide world. He decided on the bike. So Gramma, that opens up the castle for you if you want to be his hero ;-)
Luckily, we already know that Cora wants Santa to bring her a baby doll. Of COURSE she does. No worries, Santa's elves love making baby dolls, so that's a done deal.

You know, we have a lot of good pictures of James with Santa now. This is his 5th Christmas, and he's sat with Santa every year except his second (and he may have that year, had we not had him strapped into a baby carrier when we saw Santa on the KCS Holiday Express). Makes us wonder if Cora will ever trust the jolly guy enough for a solo photo op...
After the photo session, the kids hung out in the auditorium for a while watching old Christmas cartoons and enjoying their candy canes.
Cora may be afraid of Santa, but she does not suffer from stage fright. I'm expecting crowd-pleasing participation in her school's Christmas Program.
Of course, as we were leaving the building, Cora suddenly decided that she didn't get her chance to sit in Santa's lap and cried about it. Well, the line was quite long at that point and Buster was waiting for us in the car. (He had his first appointment with our local vet today - he was due for heartworm meds, has been having an allergic reaction to the shampoo we bathed him with twice, and suffered a tick bite two days ago, so he's now on antibiotics, allergy meds, and got his monthly heartworm med - good gracious! He did awesome with the vet though, as if there'd be any doubt, and everyone there loved him and thought he was the cutest thing! Our vet agreed that he's definitely part Basset Hound and part Catahoula. He's gone up a few pounds since living with us, to 37 lbs, which the vet declared to be a perfect weight for him, since he's all muscle.) Luckily Cora was easily distracted by getting back to Buster, and we're pretty sure they were fake tears - she wanted to stay longer and play with her buddies in the auditorium, not sit on Santa's lap!
