Like last year, we had a heads-up that school would at least be getting a delayed start today due to the ice storm (hooray for sleeping in!) School closed down at noon yesterday and work sent everyone home by 3:00pm. With no guarantee that schools would close the next day (though we suspected they would, since they close for every little thing) and it being unlikely that work would close (or even delay opening), we went about our usual weekday evening chores of prepping for the following day, doing homework (just reading and counting by 5's for James), and setting our alarms for 7:00am (to get one of us to work by at least 8:00am and the other one there after dropping the kids at 10:00am). Turns out all area schools were closed today though and work did have a delayed start, so we spent the day checking out the ice around the house and neighborhood (while simultaneously checking our neighborhood road conditions for a late afternoon run), doing a bit of teleworking (we'll use leave to make up the other hours, as there is a "liberal leave policy" on bad weather days), baking some banana bread, playing with the kids, and doing a few chores (laundry, since it never ever ends). James got to play some video games and Cora generally harassed us all and got into a little bit of everything, as usual (we love her to pieces, but she is NOT a homebody like the rest of us), and both kids drew us some cool pictures (we had James draw us his recent dreams and nightmares, which are quite interesting) while we FaceTime'd with Gramma. I'll call it a good day and wait with bated breath to see what tomorrow brings (we're suppose to get freezing rain again tonight, and snow/wintery precipitation most of the daylight hours tomorrow).
Catching sleet and eating it for a snack before dinner (their idea, not mine)
This is basically what "Mississippi snow" looks like
We had enough sleet/ice/snow last night that trees and branches were bent and drooping all over our property, with the little pine tree in our makeshift parking area not surviving to the thaw...
Icicles everywhere!
Buster enjoyed licking the ice off every surface at his level...
Poor flowers (daffodils, snow bells, narcissus, etc.) around our yard did not survive the storm either
Breaking up chunks of ice from the grass and eating icicles pulled off leaves
When we walked the neighborhood, they stopped at every single mailbox and pulled off the icicles to see who could find the longest ones...
...James won with these ones pulled from the Train mailbox at the end of our street
