Today was the kids' first field trip of the summer. They went to see Lego Movie, making it their second viewing, and they loved it. They loved the song and sitting with all their school buddies and getting their own personal popcorn and soda. Totally worth it. Field trips are sometimes a logistical nightmare for two working parents, but we would never deny our kids an opportunity to get out of the classroom (whether that be just for fun, like this, or a learning experience, like visiting a museum) unless they were in big trouble for something (which obviously doesn't happen at this age). So we coordinated the day as 1) Jay goes to work early, 2) Denise drops the kids at school, 3) Jay returns 1.5 hours later to chauffer the kids to the theater (yup, we're still unwilling to let them ride in the school van w/ hastily installed carseats - maybe when they're big enough for simple boosters...), 4) Jay returns to work, 5) the kids watch the 2-hour movie, 6) Denise goes to the theater to pick up the kids, grab take-out lunch, and drop them back at school to eat and nap, 7) Jay picks them up at the usual time. Easy enough, right? Except the movie let out earlier than expected, we forgot to switch vehicles after the theater drop off (requiring an extra 5 minutes of driving around station and hunting each other down), and noon traffic in Vicksburg was actually traffic (doesn't happen often, so when you get stuck at every light and there are more people out on the lunch hour than usual, it messes up your ETA). Luckily, one of the other moms had mentioned to Jay at drop off that she could hang with our kids if they finished early, so at 12:03 as I sat in line at a stoplight I received a text with my happy smiling kids, parked on a bench outside the theater patiently waiting for me. Many thanks to Rachel (who is also our vet - small town!)
Unfortunately, the random traffic also delayed us in getting our lunch and driving back to school, so by the time we got there almost all the other kids were already napping, having finished their lunches. No wonder Miss Cora had so many meltdowns this afternoon...
And speaking of meltdowns, our upstairs AC went out Sunday night. We called the repair crew on Monday, but didn't hear back from them. Jay attempted to switch on the fan to at least circulate air and heard a click that sounded that the thing should be working... upon investigation outside, all was well, so he turned on the AC and what do you know? Cold air. So we happily went to bed with working AC Monday night. Then woke up Tuesday morning freezing because the temp had dropped to 65 degrees in our room (that's quite cold for us, since we keep the thermostat set to 78). Hmm,, perhaps the thermostat is broken? So Jay replaced that Tuesday after work. All seemed well. Then overnight the AC was on and off, not really cooling the house to the prescribed 78, so again we called the repair crew. They came out this afternoon to discover ANTS in the outside unit, whose presence was messing up communication between the unti and the thermostat. Doh! They cleaned it out and said they'd bill us. Here's hoping that ant relocation doesn't cost much more than a service call!
